Abstract
The poblano peppers cultivation faces phytosanitary challenges, including pepper wilt caused by the oomycete Phytophthora capsici. Streptomyces spp. belong to the actinomycete family and have multiple mechanisms for controlling phytopathogens, such as producing secondary metabolites and lytic enzymes, along with promoting plant growth and biomass. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antagonistic activity of two strains of actinomycetes, Streptomyces lasiicapitis (B22) and S. neyagawaensis (B31), against P. capsici (Pc2), as well as their growth-promoting effects on poblano pepper plants of the Ancho San Luis variety. Plants inoculated with B22+Pc2 showed 63% and 21.8 % less disease severity in the leaf area and roots, respectively, compared to control plants. The amount of P. capsici inoculum in the soil was reduced by 65 % in plants treated with B22+Pc2 relative to the positive control. Streptomyces spp. strains, both alone and in combination, promoted earlier development in the initial phenological stages (between 20 and 25 days). The number, diameter, length, and weight of the fruits increased compared to the fruits from the positive and negative controls.
