Abstract
Drug delivery vehicles enhance shelf life, improve solubility and dosing. Especially allow the drug to be delivered to localized sites at a controlled or sustained rate. Layered double hydroxides are inorganic particles that have been proposed as vehicles for multiple drugs in the last two decades. However, the potential of the structure of these particles has not been fully exploited since their composition and chemical structure can be manipulated to add more functionalities integrated into a single particle of nanometric dimensions in order to obtain theranostic materials. In this work, we propose some routes to obtain lanthanide-modified layered double hydroxides particles, and we will show the fluorescence profiles in the visible region obtained by photoluminescence spectroscopy, and especially it will be shown that the emission can be detected in commercial microscopes either as pure particles or even when they are loaded with a therapeutic agent. The results demonstrate that layered double hydroxides particles are alternative platforms for developing therapy and diagnostic systems in nanometric dimensions.
