Abstract
This study aimed to determine the impact of genetic and environmental factors on pre-weaning growth traits in hair lambs raised under tropical conditions in Mexico. Birth weight (BW, kg), weaning weight (WW, kg), weaning age (WA, days), adjusted weaning weight (AWW, kg), and daily weight gain (DWG, g/day) were recorded for 792 lambs over two years of production. Lamb data were grouped by breed: BlackBelly (BB), Katahdin (KT), White Pelibuey (WPB), Red Pelibuey (RPB), and undefined breed crosses (UBC); by year (2022, 2023); by season of birth (dry, rainy, northern); by birth type (single, twin, triplet); and by sex (female, male). Results show that genetic group, lambing type, lamb sex, and weaning age significantly affect the variables BW, WW, AWW, and DWG, with the KT breed showing particularly higher productivity. Additionally, single births and male lambs were associated with better growth performance. These findings highlight the importance of considering genetics and reproductive factors in selection and management programs to enhance production outcomes in sheep farming systems in the Mexican tropics.
