Abstract
Monitoring of forest plantations is traditionally carried out in situ, a process that requires long periods and incurs high economic costs. As an alternative, vegetation indices derived from high-resolution imagery can be used to assess plantations. The present study aimed to evaluate plant survival and vigor using vegetation indices (NDVI, GCI, and SAVI) obtained from a multispectral sensor mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), thus providing a basis for monitoring plantations established in xerophytic scrub ecosystems. Sampling plots were randomly established, and field assessments were conducted by recording plant survival, vigor, species identification, and geographic coordinates. Two UAV flights were carried out during the dry and rainy seasons using a multispectral camera. From the acquired imagery, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Green Chlorophyll Index (GCI), and Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) were calculated. Spectral values were extracted from the locations of each plant. Results showed that mean NDVI values performed best in identifying plant survival, achieving overall accuracies of 62.46 % in the dry season and 69.38 % in the rainy season. For plant vigor, overall accuracies of 36.88 % and 66.00 % were obtained for the dry and rainy seasons, respectively. Hence, multispectral sensors are a useful tool for assessing forest plantations established in xerophytic scrub ecosystems.
