Abstract

Individuals of Pterygoplichthys spp. from Champayán Lagoon System (CHLS), Altamira, Tamaulipas, Mexico, were examined between 2023-2024 for weight-length relationship, relative condition index, growth, mortality, probability of capture and exploitation rate using total length measurement. Monthly length-frequency data were collected from 316 samples and analysed using the FISAT II Tool. The estimated growth parameters were L = 453.60 mm, K=0.340/year-1, t0= -0.636 and  = 2.84. The mortality rate values were: Z = 0.830/year-1, M = 0.420/year-1, and F = 0.410/year-1. The exploitation rate (E = 0.42) was below the optimum level of 0.5, which indicates that the species is underexploited. Age limit was 8.31 and 8.98 years and the value of the length at first capture (L50=324 mm) was higher than the length of theorical first sexual maturity (Lm=236 mm). Pterygoplichthys spp. showed continuous recruitment throughout the year. Virtual population analysis (VPA) showed low natural and fishing mortality in Pterygoplichthys spp. ranging in size from 150 to 340 mm. A stock assessment, based on the study of length frequencies of Pterygoplichthys spp. in the CHLS, revealed that moderate growth, long longevity, continuous recruitment and an underexploited state could favour the success of their invasive process. Increasing fishing pressure on juveniles (≤ 250.0 mm) will lead to overexploitation and population collapse.
